Important for drivers: for what violations a drivers license is revoked

List of violations for which the administrative penalty of "deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle" is imposed:

Refusal to carry out an inspection is an independent reason for revoking a driver's license.

Art. 174. (1) For driving after consuming alcohol:

1. over 0.5 per thousand to 0.8 per thousand inclusive - for a period of 6 months and a fine of BGN 500;

2. over 0.8 per thousand to 1.2 per thousand inclusive - for a period of 12 months and a fine of BGN 1,000.

(2) In case of repetition under para. 1 – for a period of 1 to 3 years and a fine of 1,000 to 2,000 BGN.

(3) In case of refusal of a test or laboratory examination for alcohol and/or drugs and their analogues - for a period of 2 years and a fine of BGN 2,000.

Art. 175. (1) A driver who:

1. drives a motor vehicle, on which the plates with the registration number are not placed in the designated places;

2. has placed or used a light or sound signal intended for a vehicle with a special mode of movement;

3. refuses to hand over his documents to the control authorities or fails to check;

4. refuse to comply with an order of the control authorities;

5. violated his obligations as a participant in an accident;

6. in the event of a traffic accident in which he was not involved, he refuses to assist with his vehicle.

(2) For a repeated violation under para. 1 the punishment is deprivation of driving rights for a period of 1 month to 1 year and a fine of 150 to 300 BGN.

(3) A driver who drives a motor vehicle that is not properly registered or is registered but does not have plates with registration number.

(4) in case of repetition under para. 3 the penalty is the revocation of the license for a period of 1 to 2 years and a fine of 600 to 1500 BGN.

(5) A driver who refuses to comply with an order of the traffic control and regulation authorities when a temporary organization of traffic or a temporary ban on traffic is introduced shall be punished with deprivation of driving rights for a period of three months and with a fine of BGN 1,000.

Art. 175a. (1) A driver who organizes or participates in unregulated competitions on the roads shall be punished with deprivation of driving rights for a period of 12 months and a fine of BGN 3,000. (2) For repetition under para. 1 the penalty is the revocation of the driver's license for a period of 3 years and a fine of BGN 5,000.

Art. 176. (1) A driver who drives a vehicle with a dangerous load without the required documents shall be punished with deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle for a period of up to 6 months or with a fine of BGN 200 to 300.

(2) For repetition under para. 1 the penalty is the revocation of the license for a period of 3 months to 1 year and a fine of 300 to 400 BGN.

Art. 178 g. (1) A driver who drives unnecessarily in the emergency lane on the highway or in the lane for oncoming traffic on a highway or expressway shall be punished by revocation of the license for a period of three months and a fine of BGN 1,000.

(2) When the violation under para. 1 is committed again, the penalty is revocation of the license for a period of 6 months and a fine of BGN 4,000.

Art. 182. (1) A driver who exceeds the permitted maximum speed in a populated place shall be punished as follows:

6. for exceeding 50 km/h - with a fine of BGN 700 and three months without a license, and for each subsequent 5 km/h exceeding 50 km/h, the fine is increased by BGN 50.

(3) A driver of a motor vehicle for public transport of passengers and dangerous goods who exceeds the permitted speed shall be punished as follows:

6. for exceeding 50 km/h - with a fine of BGN 1,000 and three months of disqualification from driving a motor vehicle, and for each subsequent 5 km/h exceeding 50 km/h, the fine is increased by BGN 50.

(4) In case of repetition, the fines are double, and the deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle is longer.

Art. 183. (5) A fine of BGN 100 shall be imposed on a driver who:

1. passes at a red traffic light signal that does not allow passing;

2. fail to provide the right-of-way when crossing a pedestrian crossing.

(6) When the violation under para. 5, item 1 or 2 is repeated, the driver is punished with a fine of BGN 200, and the license is revoked for a period of one month.

(7) A driver who enters after a sign prohibiting entry when a temporary traffic ban is in place is punished with deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle for a period of one month and with a fine of BGN 300.

Art. 190, para. 2 "The penalty of "deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle" starts from the date of confiscation of the driver's license.
